davester is right on here. In post-911 America, many insurance companies drop you after 2 claims, so there's no sense claiming anything short of a fire or the roof blowing off.
My premium and my amounts on the 2-flat I live in are remarkably similar to yours, davemachine.

damn, I paid $3700 for $174K coverage w/ a 2.5% deducable for windstorm and $1000 for other losses.

i read an article a few weeks ago that FL and many states all along the eastern seaboard are getting slammed by home insurance rates.

If I live on the side of an active volcano, shouldn't my earthquake and fire insurance cost more?

FL i understand but this article said it was affecting places like Rhode Island, Jersey, and Maine.
