I replace a 15" with a 17" under the assumption that I don't travel enough for it to matter.

I immediately noticed that I travel more often then I thought. The weight is not an issue for me, and I am not that big. The 17" MBP is so much better designed than the 17" Wintel machines, which are both much heavier and much larger, that you can actually consider traveling with it.

However, the bulk matters.

It is a hassle using it on an airplane, but I'm pretty good at sitting in an aisle seat or next to an empty seat. I think about 75% of the time, the person in front of me leans his chair back.

Also, the 17" doesn't easily fit into my carry-on bag the way the 15 does.

So, if you travel, especially by air, quite a bit, stay away from the 17". If you travel by car and just need to have a computer with you, then consider the 17".
