It wasn't just the director. The storyline was craptacular, too. Gamma dogs? Banner's dad becoming an electrical being like Zzax??!?!?!? Oy!!!!!!!!!!

Well, Ang Lee's movie at least had a great Stan Lee Cameo.

Oh yea the script sucked also but that was approved by the studio and the director. When you are as high a profile of director as ang lee was at the time he had the power to make the script changes.

Just like you might find in an actual comic book.
Lee's vision for the movie was to bring the comic book page to life -- literally. Unfortunately, it didn't work as well as he'd hoped. Gotta give him credit for being willing to take chances.

I think that you are wrong.
He departed very far from any Hulk origin story that I've read and I have not seen any reviews praising the authenticity of his vision.

Alas, credit for risk-taking doesn't equate to credit for making an entertaining movie.

You miss my point. Lee's vision for the movie was to bring the comic book page to life -- he attempted to recreate the comic book page onscreen. Hence, multiple panels onscreen at once, borders between panels, motion between panels (emulating eyes sweeping across the printed page), et al. Unfortunately, the story suffered for it.

N-OS,
It tends to be only in movies that you see such horrid departures. There's no reason for it. Comic movies _can_ be done well. Sin City. 300. Hellboy. Road to Perdition. Spiderman. In The Hulk, the writing and story didn't suffer from the vision of the movie. Swap out a good story and writing and the movie itself would have improved significantly despite the visual style.
