Re: Apple Shafts Previous Mac Pro Owners - AllGold - 01-17-2008 [quote Harbourmaster]The new ATI Radeon HD card IS backwards compatible with the older Mac Pro and that is why some folks have got their dander up... I was about to say that I didn't think Apple would sell the new ATI card as an upgrade but here it is: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=7E517358&nplm=MB198Z/A However, I'm not clear on whether it truly is compatible with the old Mac Pros. Does anyone know for sure? Oh, and a related question. Does it work with Tiger (my guess is no)? Re: Apple Shafts Previous Mac Pro Owners - JoeH - 01-17-2008 The ATI card that you linked to AllGold does have the following requirement listed, "Requires Mac Pro with PCI-Express 2.0". Since as I understand it the Mac Pros before the current ones just had PCI-Express, version 1, then it at least is not listed as a supported upgrade to the older Pros. Harbourmaster, have you seen a report somewhere that says they can be used? P.S. This issue with the 8800 card was reported over at DM last week, I guess no one brought over the news to here before now. |
