I was about to say that I didn't think Apple would sell the new ATI card as an upgrade but here it is:

However, I'm not clear on whether it truly is compatible with the old Mac Pros. Does anyone know for sure?

The ATI card that you linked to AllGold does have the following requirement listed, "Requires Mac Pro with PCI-Express 2.0". Since as I understand it the Mac Pros before the current ones just had PCI-Express, version 1, then it at least is not listed as a supported upgrade to the older Pros.
Harbourmaster, have you seen a report somewhere that says they can be used?
P.S. This issue with the 8800 card was reported over at DM last week, I guess no one brought over the news to here before now.
