Have you tested it with the images downsized a little prior to importing to FCE? I've seen some odd behavior in FCP when using large stills (including crashing due to a 'still cache' that was set too low)... use images only as big as you absolutely need, and realize that it's usually possible to go bigger than 100% in Final Cut and still see acceptable quality on screen.
I haven't tried resizing them. The main reason is because sometimes I only want to use a portion of the images. I don't really know until I get it into FCE and start working with it.
Last night I ended up with about an hour and a half to sort through 700 photos, pick 60, add them to the video, resize and add Ken Burns effect... I don't have the time to resize each image just perfectly for FCE.

I'd just test the theory--if I'm right (big "if"), they don't need to be 'sized perfectly' but rather just batched to smaller compromise dimensions.
