Find out how long the diesel fuel has been in the tank and how long since the engine has been run. If it has been there very long it can have black slime in the tank, fuel filter, injectors, and whatever. I had never heard about that until I bought a diesel pusher RV so am careful to keep the tank full between trips, to add stabilizer to the tank when filled, and to buy only from sources that have a high volume business to avoice slime from their storage tanks.

How can anybody say what to look for unless they have some sort of idea what it is and the kind of use it had? Olds V6 (garbage), Mercedes (usually good), Caterpillar D7 (pretty much bullet proof)... A big number of older diesels might have fuel pump and injector problems with ULSD.
