This is a good question and one I've been wrestling with myself. I have had need lately for a thumb drive but then I think, why not just use one of my old flash drives with its universal card reader gadjet thingy? Not as elegant as a thumb drive but it will do the job.

Give them to luddite friends in hope to drag them into the last century.
I gave a used 512 MB flash as a birthday present 2 months ago. She had not used it yet. Then I showed her it would hold the contents of *EVERY* floppy she owned (put 2 backups on CD, one to keep at work, one at home) and was amazed at the speed and convenience.I just got a new tiny 8 GB USB drive. I have almost left it somewhere three times in the last week.

1) Use for giving files to people instead of CD-R's, less hassle to make and more environmentally friendly
2) If you have old CompactFlash cards, you can use those as boot drives for older PB's, such as a PB1400, so as to be able to run the machine silently: http://retromaccast.ning.com/photo/photo/show?id=1672786%3APhoto%3A20274

I use them for saving favorite URL's and e-mail addresses so I can just walk up to any computer, plug it in and surf my favorite sites and send mail to friends!
