Not really. I would rather finish each unit quickly than finish a bunch over a long time.

I tried xgrid a few years ago, as I thought it would allow me to compress movies faster. What I found out, thought, was that it would only let me send one movie's encoding to one mac and another movie's encoding to a different mac. Has the technology evolved to split up a single task to divide among several macs?

Yes. Batch Monitor was telling me exactly which frames that each node was working on, and how much longer it should take.
