I've called his office about specific legislation in the past, several times-- I always ask for him directly-- never been put through. Who is it you think he will listen to? The "people around him" is what PB said. Is that you? So, you wouldn't count his constituents as "the people around him?" I'm in the mood for Tropical Punch today, how about the rest of you? I would count the people around him as ALL the people around him, and mostly the people directly around him... and being realistic about his time constraints. I certainly would NOT expect that if I called his office, I would speak with him personally! Re: A Conservative for Obama - Wags - 09-20-2008 Black Landlord wrote: Wouldn't that be wonderful? When has this ever been the case? PB's point was perfectly clear to me. Bush' reign has been characterized by a siege mentality - insulating himself with people who agree with him and exiling those that dare to present an opposing viewpoint. Obama is far less likely to govern like that, and that is the point. You've taken "the people around him" part completely out of context. Your rhetoric is usually better than that. Thanks, I don't get many complements 'round these parts :woot: Re: A Conservative for Obama - Black Landlord - 09-20-2008 PeterB wrote: We need a little icon for "Kool-Aid alert". The "people around him" is what PB said. Is that you? I guess BL thinks he should have a direct hotline to Barack. Or maybe he's better connected than we know? ![]() Whenever I call any of my government representatives, I always ask for them personally, and never expect to be put in direct contact, but now and then I do get a surprise. Sorry to burst your little fantsasy bubble about BO-- I'm sure, like everyone else in the public eye, he's exactly as he "seems". Re: A Conservative for Obama - guitarist - 09-20-2008 PeterB A candidate in his circumstance doesn't have much of a choice, he has to listen to his advisors, consultants, and handlers, as they feed him what to say and what not to say. With no experience managing large organizations and institutions, and not having yet acquired the necessary knowledge to grasp the multitude of large-scale issues he's confronted with daily on the campaign trail, he needs an earpiece or a teleprompter just to keep up. It's not his fault. Most of the limited amount of time he's been in public life has been spent campaigning. If you've built a career out of talking, listening, talking, being thoughtful, intelligent, and eloquent, heck, there's not a lot of time left over to do much else. Re: A Conservative for Obama - Wags - 09-20-2008 Do you live in Illinois? I've been able to speak directly to my senator and representative here in Oregon a few times, too. One time Wyden helped me resolve a car accident where an army recruiter rear-ended me. Sometime just for fun call the government 800 number and simply tell them you've been hit by a car driven by an army recruiter and see what happens. I would not expect that sort of response from the presidential candidate of either party, unless I was handing them a rather large check. I'm calling from the coast!" "What? Do you know who I am!? Hey! That's MR Joe Blow to you." "Now either get him on the phone, or I'm gonna vote for somebody else!" "Who the hell does he think he is!" Re: A Conservative for Obama - Black Landlord - 09-20-2008 I find it sad that you guys think the concept of being able to have a 1:1 communication with one's representative is laughable. I guess liberal no longer equals idealistic in 2008 Amerika. But don't let my criticism of young Barry get you down-- the droves of conservatives flocking to support him will surely result in a landslide election in his favor. Re: A Conservative for Obama - guitarist - 09-20-2008 I had a car whacked by the opening door of a police car, the quick paperwork and swift resolution of that error was a marvel. I'd say if you're going to get thumped by another vehicle, pray it's a government vehicle driven in the daytime by a responsible government official. Then you're likely to have a happy resolution of your claim. On the other hand, if you got thumped later than night, by that same underpaid official, driving his own vehicle... :driving: Re: A Conservative for Obama - Wags - 09-20-2008 guitarist wrote: It took me 5 months to resolve my claim with the army. It took the person in my office about a month just to find out which army base would be handling the claim. They asked for an unbelievable amount of information, including my tax records. After 5 months and yet another rejection letter asking for more info, info that I'd already sent except for the tax records, I got fed up. I called the major who was supposed to be handling the case and left a message telling her I was on my way to Ron Wyden's office - you know, the Wyden who's on the armed forces appropriation committee? The file was a couple inches thick. When I got to his office he just happened to be in the lobby. He introduced himself, asked what he could do to help, then turned it over to a staff person. As we were sitting in her office going through the file the major called me on my cell phone. I handed to phone to the staff lady and was privy to an amazing piece of bureaucratic exchange, full of wonderful subtext. I got a full check three days later. Interesting part of the story concerned the passenger in the back seat of my taxi during the accident. Last I heard she was asking for $10,000 in damages because she, "couldn't have good sex with her boy friend anymore". She said at the scene that she wasn't hurt. Always wondered how she did with her claim (wonder if the boyfriend filed a claim, too). |
