They look like fun places to hang out. Oops, bad example. I mean, ...never mind.

A comment on older truck stops...some are still around. Traveled to a northern state, pulled off the highway into (shall remain nameless) because we needed gas. Odd feeling began as the clerk started to watch us with binoculars as we pulled up to a self serve pump, went inside to pay (credit swipe "out of orederr" according to sign). Clerk wearing unzipped pants and a gun belt(no visible weapon in either case)...decided to drive on and left on the fumes in our tank...two guys came out of stop and stood there and waved...kind of a northern version of "Deliverance".....yes, this happened in 2008.

Dakota,

The big truck stops don't resemble gas stations at all. Rather, they're like mini-metropolis'. Many even have special systems to provide truckers access to the TV and the Internet right in their cabs. I saw a demo of the system a couple of weeks ago and it was truly amazing. Factor in the sheer number of other services provided at the truck stop and it'll literally blow your mind.

Remember back in pre-cell days they had separate dining areas for "professional drivers" that had phones in the booths.

I don't think anyone has mentioned that, in addition to all the merchandise and the tall clearance at the pumps, truck stops have high flow rate pumps with a pump on each side of the fueling bay. I recently filled our diesel pusher RV from a "normal" diesel pump and it seemed like it took all day to dispense the 50 or so gallons it took to fill the tank.
