Re: Why can't I clone a drive using Disk Utility? - martinbc - 11-08-2008 I use Netrestore Helper to make an image and Netrestore to blow that image to a disc ...... it can do all the stuff that DU and CCC can't do. http://www.bombich.com/software/netrestore.html Martin Re: Why can't I clone a drive using Disk Utility? - Black Landlord - 11-08-2008 Optimistically, the drive's OK and there's something goofy about the way it's connected or jumpered. Or small chance that your other drive is causing the errors. Less optimistically, the drive's not OK. Have you done a low level format? After some tense hung finder moments, I erased that backup partition, the drive then acted healthy again, I vigorously flushed the errant troublemaker file*, repaired perms a couple of times, and tried to backup once again. Can you explain this more clearly? What exactly do you mean by "erased?" Normally one would use Disk Utility to erase it, which would involve overwriting the directory and would not leave anything to "flush." Re: Why can't I clone a drive using Disk Utility? - RAMd®d - 11-08-2008 The most intense thing a user can do to a drive is zero it, whether once or a hundred times. A low-level format can only be done by the manufacturer. I have no idea what Ps means by "vigorously flushing" a file. One can erase a drive or zero a drive. I'm not sure how vigorously applies to any of that. Re: Why can't I clone a drive using Disk Utility? - Psurfer - 11-08-2008 Sorry; to clarify, I erased the new backup w/DU, then I trashed the noted bluetooth file that was still on the source drive ("w/extreme prejudice"). When I erase using DU, choosing the format for the drive, that's as much formatting as needs to be done, right? In a little while, I'll check to make sure the source drive (orig one in the G4) is also jumpered to cable select. Also, the source drive is in the rear carrier as it originally came from Apple, and the new drive I put into the front carrier, thinking it would be better to keep a little more heat off the old orig drive. The front carrier holds drives horizontally- can it make a diff which side of the drive is facing up? ps. I have no idea how that smiley got in that top paragraph, but it's appropriate. Re: Why can't I clone a drive using Disk Utility? - btfc - 11-08-2008 What OS? What G4? Start up from a different startup disk and "Repair Disk" on the disk you want to clone.Try the clone with the drive in the second level of the rear carrier or to an external connection if possible, and make sure both drives are jumpered correctly. Re: Why can't I clone a drive using Disk Utility? - RAMd®d - 11-08-2008 The smilie is a by-product of the end parenthesis and any other adjacent punctuation. I call it a bug, some call it a feature. Re: Why can't I clone a drive using Disk Utility? - Psurfer - 11-08-2008 Ok. Now all is good (I think) . I moved the new drive to the rear carrier, erased it, and then cloned the source drive again, this time w/DU (restore function). So far, so good. Permissions repair ran ok on it, and no more funky cycling sound. one oddity though: After repairing perms, I then hit Verify Disk in DU. It said "Could not unmount the drive". Should that concern me? Re: Why can't I clone a drive using Disk Utility? - GGD - 11-09-2008 Psurfer wrote: That might be because Spotlight is indexing the newly cloned drive. Re: Why can't I clone a drive using Disk Utility? - Psurfer - 11-09-2008 Nope- OS is 10.3.9 Panther |
