Re: MacWorld '09 - Apple's last big show :( - Silencio - 12-16-2008 At least as long as Jobs has been back at Apple for his second stint, they have really chafed at being forced to tie major product releases to the trade show cycle instead of being able to introduce them when they're good and ready. Trade shows in general are dinosaurs, relics of the pre-Internet age. It's nice to see stuff in person, but it's been pretty rare that I've actually seen anything new at MacWorld. I used to go to Seybold every year as well, and I can't for the life of me remember when that show finally dried up and died off completely. Sucks that we're deprived of one last Stevenote, though. And I guess MacWorld '10 is a guaranteed non-starter now. Re: MacWorld '09 - Apple's last big show :( - hal - 12-16-2008 There has been a lot of talk about how there is no obvious successor to SJ - I think this message tells us it's Schiller. I would NOT assume that there will not be big news. If yer gonna pass the torch, doing it with a ban would be the way to go. Re: MacWorld '09 - Apple's last big show :( - Silencio - 12-16-2008 Well, I'd wait to see if Jobs stops giving keynotes at WWDC or stops hosting "special music events" for the media before dubbing him the next Howard Hughes. It's too bad the party probably won't continue without the guest of honor, but the other guests were always more fun to talk to anyway. The only things from the Apple booth that can't be replicated at a Store are the preview demos and the chance to directly harass an Apple developer or product manager. Re: MacWorld '09 - Apple's last big show :( - IronMac - 12-17-2008 Frankly, why would Jobs even bother doing a trade show again? As others have pointed out, their days are over and done with. Re: MacWorld '09 - Apple's last big show :( - estnyc - 12-17-2008 It's been awhile since I've been to a MacWorld. For my first few, I was a regular writer for a long-gone DTP magazine, and an equally defunct mag aimed at users of Macs. I'd get my current employer to spring for the trip, and spend days beforehand cadging invites to various press events/parties. I miss how they used to have a press day for us types, before they let the unwashed masses in. Hmm. I was a speaker on a panel once, come to think of it. Oh, and the Mac Geekette groupies from back when AOL was Mac-only (it went downhill after they let in the PC folks, of course). They made up for the lack of nose candy in the occasional stretch limo. Claris (remember?) once had a huge do at one of SF's fancier seafood places. I don't think I've ever eaten so many raw oysters. My absolute favorite memory was the big party some artsy software house (KPT?) threw at which Todd Rundgren and his band played well into the wee hours. His wife sang with them, and was about the hottest thing I'd seen in a gold lame dress (well, until Renee Fleming last week, but that's another story). Back then it was the cool place to see all the cool new toys, of all descriptions. In recent years it's been less and less important, though. More lately as a gathering of the faithful than anything else. I remember how pathetically small the NYC MacWorlds were. Ah well, another closed chapter from my misspent youth. Re: MacWorld '09 - Apple's last big show :( - jdc - 12-17-2008 that didnt sound misspent at all =) ![]() |
