529 is not pre-tax - it's tax deferred.
I've got two of them right now. My kids are still a decade away from using them so I'm not too worried at this point.

i worked. had grants and scholarships. and my parents did what they could. it's what i expect for my son.

i would imagine that would vary according to the location of the college and housing. rural georgia maybe. chicago - doubtful.
