What about Cirque Shanghai? Cirque shows are always great and perfectly acceptable and entertaining for preteens, teens and grownups. Drawback: expense. Oof.
Edit: There is a TON of live performance in Chicago. Try asking at one of the theaters downtown for advice. Most box office people are happy to help find you a show even if it's not at their theater.

Yes, follow gabester's advice and try Hot Tix.
There is a new Cirque-esqe show called Cavalia at Navy Pier.
As BL mentioned, Blue Man Group is a good option
The Chicago Shakespeare Theater is doing Aladdin
Marriott Lincolnshire (about an hour N of the city) is doing Cinderella. They perform theater in the round and generally do a very nice job.

Your first stop should always be hottix.org to see what's available for half price. Cirque Shanghai is on there every day, and Blue Man Group most days.
But I took my sister's family to Arabian Nights last Sunday, and they all loved it. Even the nine-year-old, who we expected to be a little restless, was leaning forward for the entire show. The few bawdy references seemed to go right over his head, and were nothing worse than broadcast television. It's at the Lookingglass Theatre, in the Old Pumping Station next to the Water Tower.

The possibility of discounted tickets (hottix.org) sounds great! dmann- thanks for the link and the suggestions. The suggestions sound very family friendly and fun! Mr. Downtown- we will follow up on the hottix.org suggestion. The Arabian Nights production also sounds like a very good possibility. I do sincerely appreciate all of the help each of you have given us!

Haven't been to the Windy City for a while, but an off-beat troop was staging THE BRADY BUNCH episode by episode in a dinner theatre seating some time ago. Might be worth a look see.

There may have been a more recent revival I missed, but "The Real Live Brady Bunch" originated and ran here in the 90's.DM
