The 2.4GHz band provides for the operation of a lot of devices including cordless phones, microwave ovens, and WiFi routers.
And of those (and other) devices can interfere with one's 2.4GHz wireless network.

Noticed the same thing here. Listening to streamed music via Airport express over whole house audio and it cuts out when the microwave is running, but not reliably.
