What Jimmy said but don't rule out the tie thing if communication breaks down ... or you just want another head for over the mantle. B)-

"I don't deal with peons, and your corp office ain't too far to call." - jimmypoo

The corp office is going to be the problem. Threatening to call them won't help, since they will be the ones making the decision and will weigh $400 in the hand vs maybe $50 in the bush.

Always remember that they may not care if your mother leaves, but they do care if she tells all her friends and family why and that causes many more to leave.

I want my bank to pay me a service charge when they screw up.

It's great she tried to handle it all on her own. And a pity the person helping her close her old account didn't remind her that any outstanding ACH's would come back against the old account. Big gap there, even though it's not their responsibility to be mind readers.

My only advice is to let the prez know that your mom was under the impression that the bank would make the ACH's come out of the new account. The reason she was under that impression was because the branch said they'd take care of "it." --- oooh, what's the definition of "it" ...

There's absolutely no way any bank can (ACH requests come from the company making the request, and the request is made against a specific account) but your mom didn't know that. She should have known, yes, and so it's NOT "the bank's fault," sorry.

Good idea to actually visit the bank in person. Banks don't usually forgive fees over the phone.

It IS the bank's fault they didn't CLOSE the account. The drafts were returned because the account had no money in it, not because it was closed. If they had closed it after she took the money out and put in in a new account, the drafts would be returned to the drafting companies and then they would have notified my Mom.

Gotta love banking deregulation.

Yep, the initial results of it 20 years ago weren't pretty, wish the legislators and regulators had learned their lesson then. :villagers:
