4 WD = Just getting stuck farther out.

Re: Morons of the week - Marc Anthony - 12-03-2009

The only dumb decision they made was traveling without snow chains; otherwise, they seem to be victims of circumstance.

Some of you folks scare me with how much you don't know about the number and size of areas with no cell coverage...
Being "out of cell range" around here takes about 5 minutes, and I go in and out of cell range about 4 times on my way to work in the morning.

They were stuck overnight... not going all donner-party-of-two...

going out after 9PM in some projects for a 6 pack of Bud could be construed as poor parenting by any one high and mighty enough, too.

Re: Morons of the week - volcs0 - 12-03-2009

Again, maybe I don't get out much, but we have four kids and leave the oldest (a teenager) frequently to keep an eye on them, help them get in from school, etc. There have been a few situations where we missed the train or something and couldn't get home in time. My teenager is old enough to troubleshoot, call the neighbor, call our folks, etc. There have even been cases where (gasp), we cannot contact them by phone... and believe it or not, they are OK. I'm not sure how we all survived back in the 70's and 80's without our constant cell phone contact...

An 18 year-old? I have 18 year-old patients who already have 2 kids. In Illinois, a 14 year-old is considered (by law) old enough to be in charge of younger children. DCFS? C'mon. I only call DFCS when I see physical abuse to a child or if I have a child who claims they are being threatened. I can only imagine the call I would make, "Uh, I have a kid, left in the care of an 18 year-old by their parents." They would have a good laugh over that one.

Other than using some poor judgement about where they could or should drive, I still don't see the crime they committed.

Would have given them the benefit of the doubt if this hadn't been the second year in a row they'd done the same thing. They're just not getting it.

Two years in a row? Time to get rid of that Subaru. Big Grin

Re: Morons of the week - Mike Johnson - 12-03-2009

who also got stuck briefly last year while getting their tree does not equal needing rescue

Jeez, in 2006 I was late picking my son up from preschool because I got stuck in my driveway. A moving truck was blocking me. Quick, call DCFS.

Responsible off-road driving doesn't mean not getting stuck. It means, if (when) you get stuck, you can get yourself out of it. Which this guy evidently does.

If there's anybody to blame for this whole "rescue" attempt, it's the folks who underestimated this guy. Blaming him for the wasted effort is just making things worse.

I also don't see why folks are up in arms. To start, my house is outside cell phone range and I live in the city, so jimmypoo's silly cell phone diatribe is absurd. Also, getting stuck and unstuck is simply part of normal off-road driving in much of the west. The couple was competent enough to get themselves unstuck and they had blankets and water in the vehicle so they were relatively prepared. I agree that they should have had snow chains (and a decent jack and shovel) with them (I carry snow chains in my 4WD whenever I'm offroading, summer or winter), but many off-roaders don't for some odd reason.

Just to play devil's advocate, I'd rather be paying the sheriff's office to actually be doing something than paying them to either sit on their asses, sit on their asses running radar, or sitting on their asses at Dunkin' Donuts.

And sometimes, our government officials act just as irresponsibly as the people they protect.
