I would assume they stand at the bottom of the sledding hill and watch for the little kids who are totally fearless, and run back up the hill even after epic wipeouts.

Think Calvin and Hobbes after going off a cliff, and getting right back on the wagon.

I was one of those kids. Riding my bike down 'suicide hill' hand off.. Jumping off 60 foot cliffs into a lake far below. Free climbing in the Sierras... I am far more fearful as an adult. Broken parts tend to do that to you after a while.

I don't think there is much of a line for tryouts. You probably just show up and whoever doesn't die in the first week is probably world class.

Yep. I wonder if life insurance is affordable for these "athletes".

I wonder though, how exactly does one know they have any potential in that sport? Did someone look at them and say, "Hey kid your jump shot stinks but I bet you would be great going down an icy track in a skin tight suit with a helmet on at 90mph".

The women's gold medalist in skeleton ran track in the UK for some years before she figured she couldn't be a world class performer in that field. I have no idea how she made the switch from track to skeleton, but it obviously worked out well for her.

And Buzz, at least one of the men's skeleton racers was in his late 30s.
