I'll just used the flipped open cassette case that was my "now playing" stand for CDs all those years before MP3s.

Classic.

Geez, nice idea but poor execution. Would it have been that difficult to find a decent grade of wood to work with? Red oak, walnut, teak, etc. - and lets not get started on how rough it is. Do the Dutch have sandpaper available over there?

Couldn't one be made out of clay, then baked in a kiln? With some felt pads added, so the iPad isn't resting on a stone-like surface? Molding one out of clay and glazing or decorating it might be fun...

Without just a tad more girth or weight (or some real sticky bubblegum), that has a bit of tip-over factor.

Weight and balance is key, when designing DIY iPad stands. In order for a block of wood to be heavy enough, it'd have to be perhaps larger than you might like for casual use.

Based on the design Dutch boy's dock, its weight is irrelevant. That could be a piece of plastic, if it were long enough.

What kind of wood is that? Looking at the direction of the grain, I'd be concerned that the lip that anchors the front of the 'Pad might snap off, depending on the variety of wood used.

Yes, and if the weight is irrelevant, and the length is the issue, in order for it to be long enough, it's too long to be practical (outsized for its purpose) compared to alternatives. I'd think very heavy, and very small, would be more desirable.

Though in this case, it's a reverse status symbol, calling attention to its bonehead Dutch simplicity and cheapness. Which has its charm.

If they made the stand out of Ironwood it might be heavy enough.
