Actually, the 999 price isn't new. I got one last November for that price.

yeah, the 13" has been at that price for a while. I bought one in September.

Again, my big complaint with Apple are the prices. Check this out:
http://www.compusa.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=5586942&sku=G180-17350&SRCCODE=COMEM532C&cm_mmc=Email-_-Main-_-COMEM532-_-email
And this is NOT a refurb.
No, I wouldn't buy one-unless one of the members of this august forum could hack one-but my PB G4 is getting long in the tooth. And as much as would like an MBP I just don't have the dough for one of these refurbs.

Sorry for the edits: early morning before coffee spelling and grammar errors.

DP: nice machine if you can put up with Windows 7.

Over the course of 4 years (which is about how long I keep my Macs) the price difference would be offset by not having to worry about spyware, wiping & reinstalling Windows, etc.

Then you should buy the gateway.

Dont get me wrong, I think Apple could do a couple hundred dollar+ decrease across most of their line -- except for maybe the Macpros, which need a $500+ one.
