I was never picked up from school unless a had an early doctor's appointment etc.

I either walked, took the bus, or rode my bike.

I think there is a fear that something will happen to your child walking to or from school on his/her own.

I have a tendency to agree, although I think those who suggest the kids need to be picked up so they can be quickly whisked off to some other activity are also correct about many. In the endeavor to make sure kids are kept busy and out of trouble, too many are being robbed of their chance to be kids without the pressure of intricate time management issues.

I sure am glad I'm not now parenting a child. My son walked or rode his bike to school from the time he was about 9. To him it was a sign of growing up and learning to become responsible. (And he hated the bus.) We actually lived quite a ways from the school, too, and there were no sidewalks. Guess what? He survived! I have this silly idea that if more kids were allowed to walk to and from school that there would be fewer who are overweight. Dumb, huh?

I walked to school when I was in first grade, maybe K -- I don't remember.
Later, after we moved, I took a school bus, then public transportation from around sixth-grade on because middle school was clear across town.

High school, I was able to ride a bike but it was too far to walk to, though I walked home a few times.

If kids walked to school there would be no need for gyms to exercise in.

I had to walk to school. No gyms, no exercise programs.

No one gives better parental advice than the childless.

I guess I should have mentioned before I posted, I had to walk about a mile from my house to the bus stop each way as a child. I'm guessing that I was an exception though and not the rule, generally speaking. The walk back and forth was both good exercise and very entertaining, because the area where I lived was full of interesting wildlife, or at least it was to a ten-year old boy. Big Grin

But in all seriousness, I remember seeing wildlife there as a child which is apparently no longer there, which is very sad... examples:

..and how many registered level 3 sex offenders live along the walking route to/from school. In the city we used to live in, the number was uncomfortably large, with a still larger number of commuter-type offenders who would troll the route, looking for unaccompanied children to 'pick up'. Not every place is safe.

Yes, because we know that all parents are doing SUCH a fine job. :eye:

TheCaber, that's a different situation entirely. Are most places populated by level 3 sex offenders?

My parents were (obviously) not childless.
