Nobody in the world moves as much as Americans do. People may not be loading up the wagons anymore but the pioneer mentality is still the hallmark of this country. That is why the country is so evenly developed. You can find all basic services in the most remote parts.
The only explanation for an unemployed person to refuse a $10/hr job is that they are making more than that as unemployed. The coal miner example I gave pretty much shots down the argument that Americans won't do hard work if the pay is right.

Expenses last time I moved cross-country: Approx. $5,000
Average hourly wage for a migrant worker: $6.14
Average duration of a job for a migrant worker: 5 weeks.
Number of hours that it would take me to work off my moving expenses at migrant worker wages: 815 hours.
Time that it would take me to work off my moving expenses, assuming no additional expenses, a 12-hour work-day and 6 day work-week: 11.4 weeks.
Yeah.
That career-change would be totally worth it!!

I am sure your hypothetical person had to live in Bangor, Maine and has only found a job in San Diego just to buttress your argument. How about CA residents? Why don't they take farm jobs? Could it be, just could it be that somehow they are making more where they are? This is how disingenuous people are flushed out. You could have argued for higher farm wages but you didn't.

Thanks for the link. According to the article, here in PA I could get up to $528/mo(and I have no reason not to), plus qualify for $12000/yr in healthcare subsidies for a total of $39,456 a year. This translates to $18.96 per hour.
