Is the white MacBook worth, say, $300-400 more than a Dell Inspiron or the various HPs, Toshibas, etc. one can get at Staples for $500-700? I can't speak to build quality, but users are noticing the better OS experience and fewer hassles. My brother's family has always been a PC household, but now the teenage kids (two in college) have Mac laptops, and his wife has one, too, and loves it. Back in the '90s, when Apple was at its lowest ebb, the college kids all used PCs. My three kids were exceptions (because Macs were all that I would buy, or hand down); I remember my daughter having all sorts of problems with her college IT people, who thought Macs were just a nuisance (and she had, for a while, a Performa 5215 'road Apple', which left her envious of her friends' more-reliable PCs—I finally got her the original blueberry iBook, for $1,700 [!], which still runs, though no one is using it). Now I notice that, at Harvard, almost all the kids are toting MacBooks and MacBook Pros. So clearly people, particularly the young, are willing to pay extra for Macs, even MacBooks. So 'hideously expensive' or not (like the MacBook Air, with its 1.4 GHz C2D processor), they're worth what people are willing to pay for them—that's the definition of 'value'. /Mr Lynn Re: If I Liked Windows, I'd Save $800! - Filliam H. Muffman - 01-20-2011 On the other end, you can get a laptop with a much better GPU than the 15" MBP (something that actually qualifies as "Professional" ) and USB 3 (better than FW) for $600 less. MS became stagnant with Windows and Internet Explorer. Once people starting migrating from IE, choosing a new platform was much easier. Windows was never a problem for me as I've been a Linux user for six years, now entering the seventh. Also a Mac user since 1992, perhaps 1991, I forget. I know my first Mac was an LC II and I'm pretty sure it was purchased in 1992. Again, I have a rather expensive MacBook Pro 17". I don't have many regrets (other than the fact that I could have purchased a 27" iMac instead), but I desired semi portability and eSATA. Not many options for me to choose from on the Mac side if I want eSATA. My MacBook Pro is the most elegant notebook I have ever used. The unibody design is quite fetching. However, I am not so blinded by the elegance to notice that my Asus Eee PC 901 and Asus Eee Box 1006 are not to shabby either and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Netbook edition is quite the pleasure to use. Wow, I have been out of touch ![]() USB 3 has been on PC laptops from just about every manufacturer but Apple for about a year now. The ones that do not have USB 3 have either powered eSATA, or eSATA with a USB port right next to it for power. Toshiba just announced the DynaBook T551, Core i7-2630QM quad-core, 8GB of RAM, 120Hz 3D display, 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 540M (two generations newer than the current MacBook Pro and twice as much VRAM), 750GB hard drive, Blu-ray drive, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n WiFi, webcam, USB 3.0 port, and HDMI output. Guess you don't mind waiting . . . or, knowing the price? Under the fairly plain casing of the T551, there is an Intel Core i7-2630QM quad-core mobile CPU with a base clock speed of 2.0 GHz running things, yet this is still a very mobile computer with a hard disk drive providing a capacity of 750 GB, which is going to be enough storage for most uses. The video is handled by the 1 GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M graphics card, which is combined with up to 8 GB of DDR3, this is how the T551 can produce brilliant 3D images, along with the 3D screen and glasses of course! Other features include Gigabit Ethernet, super fast USB 3.0 ports, 802.11n Wi-Fi, a webcam and the HDMI output, which is essential as this enables streaming to other larger monitors or 3D HDTV for that great 3D effect. However, remember not to forget to pick up some extra 3D glasses, as your Pals will not be able to enjoy the 3D effect without them. There is no word on pricing or availability at the moment, although the Toshiba Dynabook T551 is likely to be released in Japan first of all.
