Re: FIOS is fast. Greasy weasel fast. - thermarest - 06-20-2011 While not quite as, um, emphatic, as Paul, I do have cause for envy and complaints. Actual speeds of 6Mb down/ 512 up/ 50GB monthly cap, basically forced into a TV bundle for $150/mo Paul F. wrote: Re: FIOS is fast. I'm w/ the jealous crowd, and cbelt3; Fios is available a block away in all directions, so the trucks even park on our block seemingly just to taunt us, but but for years now we've been stuck in a Fios-free zone. I'm gonna start slashing the tires, and vandalizing the Fios trucks when they park on our block from now on, and leave a note saying, "No Fios parking on this block until service is being installed here." :-) Congrats Trouble, you lucky SOB. /// Re: FIOS is fast. But that is only about $30 a month. Cablecards are cheaper as well. Re: FIOS is fast. Worth every penny That doesn't mean your speeds are fast, it actually means your speeds are slow enough to not saturate your WiFi. To be fair, 5 GHz 802.11n is pretty fast and even 2.4 GHz 802.11n is faster than most people's internet speeds. If you only have an 802.11b connection, that actually makes your speeds fairly slow. Even my Comcast connection could saturate my old 802.11g connection when speed boosting, 802.11b would have severely throttled the available speed. You dig? Re: FIOS is fast. I am running a b network on an original base station. this makes me wonder if my cable connection could be faster if I upgraded that finally. I have never known what to buy, and the new Extreme base stations seem far too expensive. In any case, I should run a cable and see what my connection tests at that way (and no, it isn't going to be FiOS). Re: FIOS is fast. Greasy weasel fast. - silvarios - 06-20-2011 Real world 802.11b speeds might give you 4-5 Mbps. My Comcast cable connection was far faster. I'd get between 18-30Mbps down and 3-5Mbps up. Do you like the Airport setup and hardware? If yes, do you need any ethernet ports? If no, why not try an Airport Express? You can't run simultaneous dual bands (faster 5 GHz network separate from a slower 2..4 GHz network), but it isn't bad otherwise. Works best with 10 clients or less. Refurb Express for $69 plus tax from Apple. Re: FIOS is fast. Greasy weasel fast. - Trouble - 06-20-2011 WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW. WOW! Just did a speedtest on my iPhone. 59 ping. 18.46 Mbps down. 16.85 up. Wow. Re: FIOS is fast.
