I'm pretty sure that I don't know enough about the parties involved to have an opinion. But if she's 23, I assume he's in that general neighborhood as well. I am very sorry about what you are going through, but from what you describe, I find it difficult to convict him just yet. The DUI makes him seem like a bad seed, but cold feet is not in itself grounds for banishing him from you lives forever. Some amount of uncertainty may actually be healthy for their relationship in the long run.

Believe it or not, I was more inclined to call him a loser for first telling your daughter he doesn't love her anymore, then to change his mind. I never considered the 'financial aspects' of his situation. I just didn't like a person leading someone else along when they're not sure. But I just may be naive about relationships.

I am amazed that there are so many people here who are able to do a complete workup on the boyfriend and come to well researched conclusions regarding his character based only upon a couple of sentences from the girlfriend's dad. Your powers of analysis are far beyond anything I could ever achieve, and actually far beyond anything I had ever thought possible of human beings.

Sorry, but a DUI conviction is not "just bad luck."
It is an indication of a serious substance abuse problem.
Not someone I'd want to see my kids around on a regular basis.
