You could also use a slice of wooden doweling.
Glue the doweling into the original home of the tether.
Attach/screw davesters Eye Screw into the doweling.
Next attach the fishing swivel to the eye and then attach
your new tether to the swivel.

Nobody has asked him if it is Threaded, or a 1/4 turn Bayonet style. Mine is a 1/4 turn Bayonet, and anything attached to it would work fine. Maybe he isn't over thinking it because he doesn't need to.

Use an old DIN 8 cable.

Lots of good input. Thanks.

I did think about the fact that not being on center will impact how well it turns without tangling. For that reason, I'm liking the small eye-hook in the center option. However, I'm not sure if that center is solid plastic or if there's some hidden venting system going on under the surface, so I'm a little hesitant to just start drilling down from the top.

I like the idea of the pull-chain as the material for the tether. I'm also thinking maybe some old phone cord or speaker wire, and yes, heavy monofilament weed hacker/fishing line would work.

My research (Subaru forums) has shown that that Universal tether thing won't work on this cap.

It's a threaded cap...turn 'til it clicks, but you can keep turning. (see pic)

I also thought of eliminating the tether altogether and using velcro on the top of the cap and inside the fuel door as a way of sticking it somewhere while fueling. Or maybe gluing a couple of very small neodymium magnets in the recesses on either side of the center of the top of the cap.

Wow! 28 responses over a gas cap...

Was I the only one who thought of this?:

Cheap and easily replaceable, should it become necessary to do so.
