For a second I thought the photo was from this year. Some trees are six weeks early in their blooming cycle in California. Napa/Sonoma wineries are afraid that early shoots will get be damaged by frost.

I wasn't blaming the lack of snow plows. I was more thinking of pre-planning of telling people to stay home, etc. But then, I don't live there, and I don't know exactly how this went down. If people were silly enough to venture out when they were told not to, then of course it's on them.
The big problem, at least here in Birmingham, is that local weather forecasters were only predicting a light dusting of snow here with accumulations much further South... right up until the serious snow hit 100 miles further North than expected. By that time kids were already at school and people were already at work, and all heck broke loose when authorities realized just how bad it was getting and everyone tried to get home at once during the heaviest part of the snowfall.

Also, the temperature was in the 50s Sunday and Monday so most of us expected what little snow fell to melt away from streets and even sidewalks as soon as it hit because the ground was warm. Instead, we got reminded of what we saw in 1982 and 1993: If you dump enough snow on warm ground, it'll cool it down real well and leave a nice thin layer of ice for the snow to build upon.

my son has been on the road since 3:30pm yesterday. he is safe as of 8am when he turned his dying phone on to check in. the on/off gas strategy i learned from the thread i started here enabled him to preserve enough gas to stay in the car through the night. there was no getting off I75. he is now crawling to the next exit hoping to buy gas. he is closer to his original destination than home so he's going to continue on and assess getting home options from there. from what i can gather he is in the worst part of the gridlock, I75 north approaching I285. seems it's all black ice and cars cannot move.

i got a text that my starbucks in fayetteville is closed today. it's my first adult snow day. we will not open until 9 tomorrow morning; we usually open at 5:30am. this must be bad. we don't even close for christmas.

Atlanta I-285 yesterday. I hearing some spent the night in their cars and some abandoned their cars.
Lady on TWC said their car would not go anywhere, it just a solid sheet of ice, abandoned their car
and they walked to a friends house. One guy has a 9 minutes commute and it took him 6 hours yesterday.

All those people with short commutes should have walked.

My daughter left her car in the parking deck at her office. She was going to take MARTA home, but a co-worker dropped her off. She said there was no way she was driving.

they were forecasting the 2nd worst polar bubble of the year for days.

heck, even up north here we were hearing about the nasty Winter weather coming to areas down south that don't experience it for days.

If the forecasters blew it, that's pretty bad. Down here, they were pretty much right on target as to what we'd be getting, and most people had the good sense to stay home. Almost all schools were cancelled. But then, most here have an "abundance of caution" because of things like hurricanes.

Re: New thread about the weather Down South.... - rgG - 01-29-2014

Yep, it was mostly a bad forecast, as far as the Atlanta area was concerned.
They said most of the snow/ice was going to be south of the metro area, but we got hammered instead.
After it did hit, everyone left at once, and with the ice and congestion and wrecks, it went downhill very fast.

Bad thing is one of the local weather buffs says some of the computer models are showing another
storm for next week in the South and it could be a monster compared to this one.

If you're on FaceBook check out: Nathan's Weather Center

He predicted this storm almost 2 weeks ago. Two days ago the main weather folks around here had no
mention of bad weather coming in.
