Robert, one of the things specifically mentioned in the Sony review was the poor user interface. For that reason alone, I'd be unlikely to replace the Oppo with it. As antiquated as the Oppo interface is (there's actually very little of it: you just put the disc it and off you go) I'd rather keep it and avoid wading through a bunch of Sony features I'll never use.
As far as the Oppo "breaking," we don't know that. As has been suggested, a dirty lens is as likely as a failed component.

Have you actually used the blu-ray player? If not, don't base your assessment of it on the review and give it a try. My Sony LCD TV had the XMB interface and it wasn't difficult to use at all. That and the complaints appeared to be about the smart services like Netflix, not blu-ray and DVD functionality. Assuming the Sony player works like every pother DVD and blu-ray player, you put in the disc, it loads and you enjoy the movie.

I'm gonna pack up the old Oppo and send it in for repair. I can't resist. I'm fond of it.

To paraphrase this thread, "My dvd player is broken", "I won't test the replacement Blu-ray player I already own because I might not like it", "Besides, the Oppo might not be truly broken, maybe just needs the lens cleaned", "Well, I'm sending it in for repair even though I didn't try cleaning the lens and no, I still won't try the Blu-ray player I already own."
I would have:
a. Attempted cleaning the lens.
b. Given the Sony Blu-ray a test run
c. If I didn't like the results of a and b, considered repairing the Oppo.
Nevertheless, fun thread.

Your summary forgot to include the part about the review, which was far more an assessment of its smart capabilities than its ability to play DVDs and blu-ray discs.
