I know nothing about aircraft but I do know that autopilot flies a plane, and does not purposefully crash it.

and about releasing names, the airlines don't do that, the family members do. In this case it's been done through embassies or other gov't agencies since most of the passengers weren't nationals of the country where the crash happened.
Germany may have tighter control over that information than other countries, it's just surprising that crew information hasn't leaked out yet given how many people must know who the pilots were.

"Extremely bizarre. I am a pilot, I have flown A320s in the past and all the A320s I have flown had an override code that allowed members of crew to gain access to the cockpit using the keypad at the door. Unless the pilot(s) disable the keypad from inside the cockpit [in case of hijacking/hostages etc] and completely isolate the cockpit.

Never flew Lufthansa so it's theoretically possible their setup is different, but I doubt it."

Which, unfortunately, suggests that it was disabled, and was deliberate. Still speculation, of course.

Are the Lufthansa pilots armed? Conceivably the lock could be shot open. Or is that only in the movies?

I have no idea if they're armed, but it could be a huge tactical error to wander out into the general population of the plane with your duty weapon, and get relieved of it.

As for shooting the lock- 1) I bet the doors could easily withstand the average handgun round, several of them, in fact. B) shooting out a lock is pretty much movie/TV fare. There's a real risk of a ricochet injuring or even killing someone, assuming it could be done at all. I don't know if shooting a keypad would do anything more than disable the keypad anyway.

Of course, if you're faced with the the choice of injuring or sacrificing a few passengers, or saving the plane, blast away.

Lots of details on how the door works.

They are reportedly grenade proof so good luck with a handgun.

Very interesting. The film doesn't show whether a rogue pilot in the cockpit can override the emergency access code by hitting the Lock toggle. If the Times story were true, that would be the likely scenario; otherwise the second pilot would have quickly gained entry.

Methinks the video might have purposely skipped over some important information.

But 'Sally' is hot.

The keycode/outside lock can be overridden inside the flightdeck to not allow any access.

Seems everything was voluntary by the co-pilot (in control of the plane), based on the report that just came out, and he deliberately refused to open the door. It appears he was not incapacitated and had regular breathing going on, but would not respond to anything.

More to come, I'm sure...
