How long should I wait?

I think I would give it 24-48 hours.
For a full immersion, wait no less than a week.

I'd take it to a professional.

Also, I don't understand how one cannot notice something so big in their swim trunks?

At least a week - a friend was able to get his working after a 10 mins in a pond. Surprisingly it worked with no problems.

I'd let it "dry" for a week, as well.

About half-way through, I'd put in new, dry rice.

I restrained myself, but it was hard.

I've rescued two iphones fished out of toilets with the rice trick–48 hours.

I kept a big bag of desiccant from the driers we use to dry plastic in our extrusion area. Put the phone in a bag and then I set it on top of our server rack. Left it there for 1-2 days. Saved a few phones that way.

Speaking of desiccant... - RAMd®d - 06-15-2015

Can one "recharge" them?

And how can you tell if they need it?

If they do their job, they've absorbed moisture. So can you microwave them to get it out and make them more- functional? Or would that be like cooking popcorn.

OK here's the scoop:
Drove 2 hours to the Apple Store, and they accepted my walk-in appointment.
The swap was quick and easy, and it is a brand new phone for $329 + tax on my credit card.
Now I'll send the receipt to SquareTrade and wait for the money.
Even the genius said that the phones are so light these days, you don't realize you're wearing them.
And yes, these swim trunks have deep pockets; in contrast, I don't.
