They only need very small gaps. Step 2: Set out traps to either catch/release or kill. I've used both types. The key is to set them properly...always with the business end against the wall, never in open areas (mice/rats run along the walls, not out in the open). Step 3: Plug the openings. It may take a few days, but you should get something. Peanut butter with black sunflowers works very well. I use my birdseed which is heavy with black birdseed.
