I don't want it running during the day when I'm working

Huh?

Wouldnt that be the *exact* time you want it running so your work is backed up?
Agreed!
then you'd both be wrong - I want to run it at the end of the day
So, go to system preferences, and in the morning turn it off. Then set a reminder, so you can turn it back on in the evening.
Which completely defeats the idea of automatic backups.

I agree this is not a good back up plan. but my 2009 mini no longer sleeps properly, the drives continue to spin, this is a known issue with the OS and isn't going to get fixed. I installed solar power this year, and so tested everything in my home with a killawatt. My computer sitting there with a gazzilon backup drives and USB hubs and speakers, etc, burns a lot of power, KWs a day. So turning off everything attached to it when I am not using it cuts that down by about 500% (100 watts to 20 watts or so).

Sounds like a great time/reason to consolidate Wink

I used to be like that. Now just 2 drives, client files and backup. IF I could fit my client files internally Id only have one. =)

I quit the whole multi drive backup and just went with backblaze. Easy peasy.

Actually, if you cut it by 100% you would be down to zero. Apparently you are meaning to say that you cut it to 20% of normal.

Time Machine Editor on my wife's computer - back up every 4 hours.

Carbon Copy Cloner on my Mom's computer - complete clone once a day.

Both on my computer but I turn off my backup drives most of the time and only back up on the weekend. Yes, that's bad practice but I do very little content creation on my machine so there's next to nothing lost, even over the course of a week. Lame, eh?

yes, but this is close to what I'm wanting to do. My creation happens all at once usually - I don't need constant backing up.

I'd bet there's even a way to automate that... although I haven't done any research into it.

Check if Time Machine is active...

Lots more I'm sure.
