We had a 1970's Litton tank for years, too. The innards developed rust spots in the rear corners, that would spark at higher power levels. Tried a bit of repairing, but best we could do was raise power level a little bit before sparks flew again. Replaced it w/ a 1.2 cu ft Costco Panasonic, which worked great for a few years before developing a known issue w/ the switches. Internet sleuthing fixes staved off ecycling for a few months, but spousezilla demanded a new one, so we got a 1.6 cu ft (which happened to accommodate our dinner plates) Panasonic that has been mahvellus dahling since day one. Still not as big as the Litton, but perfect for us.
We also had something similar to Hal's small, under-powered (Sharp 700W) unit (Mrs. Buzz's pre-marital mw) that we gave away around the turn of the century. The best thing about the Litton, and now the Panasonic's, is true variable power control and cooking. I would not ever get a microwave without true inverter control, or some equivalent form of real power throttling; typical full power pulsing just doesn't cut it by comparison. The Litton had an analog (twist) power dial that worked while running/cooking. Fabulous tech for 1970's kit. The new Panny's have been digital, so we lost the twisty dial, but the true, variable power cooking/control is a must. The dinky Sharp 700W was a full power pulser, so no bueno.
