...and before that (i.e. when I lived there) they were "plimsolls" (the name comes from the plimsoll line that is painted at the waterline of a ship because plimsolls generally had a white line painted around their perimeter).

Agreed. While I refer to all of these things as sweatpants myself, I think that term conjures notions of baggy, heavy, unflattering cotton loungewear. " Joggers" sounds a bit more stylish and tailored...and more marketable
