If you are a homeowner, you will add a Tesla charger and you will charge at home. I love not going to a smelly gas station. We use Superchargers when we travel point to point. My two Millennials are wrestling with not having a home. So they are getting the family PHEV that can be charged on a simple 110V - a Volt. I think there will be a need for good PHEVs for decades to come for this reason alone. In the places that are the most likely to buy EV's there are more renters than homeowners. Remember, the Infrastructure Bill is providing funds for a nationwide charging network buildout within 5 years as we speak. In San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley, we have the world's suckiest gas stations. It's just a hit it and quit it proposition. They basically just got gas. But when you hit the suburbs or go to other states, the gas stations are gloriously opulent. I might hang out at those stations, feeding at their troughs. Lolligaging at their vast beverage stations. Luxuriously putting air in my tires. Now that there is a clear standard, will be easier to add to a house to rent. I'm waiting for a killer app (business) that will take advantage of this. But then again, with the rapid advances in battery technology, why invest in a "captive audience" opportunity that may not be captive soon? Most of the advances in battery technology has been in the area of manufacturing and reducing cost. We need to wait for the next generation of battery tech for a significant improvement in energy density and charging times. But then one day Apple emerges with Apple Silicon and then all of a sudden the least of its offerings become instant powerhouses. Nobody outside of Apple anticipated that. So who knows? We all win when there is a higher density and faster charging battery. We NEED that tech now that we are baking our world from all of the extra CO2. |
