They sell whiteboard at Lowe's?

The Ace Hardware stores that I go to in Tucson are great. There's a small one very close to me, and a huge one a little farther off. It has everything, including a hobby shop where I can buy my paints & glues & stuff. Besides that, the staff is really good and they know what they're talking about. So unless I'm buying lumber, there's no reason to mess with HD. I have not tried the Lowe's here.

I LOVE the self checkouts. I am so tired of waiting in a 12 person line b/c (insert store name here) has 1 of 7 or 8 checkout lines open. And its not like they are understaffed. There's plenty of otherwise useless employees just milling around waiting to not answer your question.

I go back and forth between them (Lowe's and HD). With all except the one closest to my house, the other 4 HD's nearby are practically next to a Lowe's. So it's easy to just walk over and compare prices.

Why stand in line or use self cehck out when you can use your example (above) as a golden opportunity to raise some hell with the store's management?

It's exactly because people will put up with this kind of "Customer Service" that stores continue to push the envelope. First it's self checkouts - next they'll be expecting their customers to open the cartons in order to remove the item they want to purchase.

No cashiers today, no shelf stockers tomorrow - just train the sheep and watch the profit increase.

I miss Menard's now that I live outside of their market area.

I'd almost always rather use the self-checkouts, except for two things:
1. They should issue an operator's permit...some people can't follow onscreen directions.
2. HD's self checkouts don't have any feature for disabling their security tags, so if I know I'm buying something with a tag, I know it's faster to wait in line for a cashier and get it disabled during the transaction, rather than going through the self-checkout line, tripping the alarm sensor, and then having to wait for the audit of the receipt vs. bag contents.

Other than that, both stores are about univerally average around here. I know on most projects I'm going to have to go to both because neither will have all of the parts I need.

I'm with you. They are fooling people into thinking it's a convenience when in fact it's a big FU to the customer.

I think they do this on purpose, to keep you wandering the store longer, for more possible sales.

[quote MacMagus]Looking for a certain brand of drain cleaner...

At Home Depot: It's not with the other drain cleaners in Home and Garden. There's only a couple of cleaners there so I ask they've got a display elsewhere. 'Guy in the Home and Garden section points me to plumbing. Guy at Plumbing tells me to go to Home Repair. Guy at Home Repair tells me to look at the endcap near Paint. (Which has a nice display of disposals). Guy at Paint walks back with me to Home and Garden where we confront the first guy who confesses that they don't carry that brand any more.

[quote $tevie]I am boycotting self check-outs. I refuse to assist in automating more Americans out of their jobs.

Their long-term plan is to convince people that they can walk up to the self-checkout stand with no merchandise, pay with their debit cards, and leave happy, empty-handed.

Lowes around here costs about 5-10% more than HD and carries the same small stuff.

I guess I am mad at Lowe's because they bought Eagle and Eagle was better.

I will not use HD self checkout - I will walk out of the store if that is the only register open.
