Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - lafinfil - 05-03-2008 [quote rgG]I think Minty would appreciate any good deed done in his honor. He'd probably appreciate a good argument about it too Maybe I'll just make a donation to the ACLU in his name .... I keed .... I keed ; -) Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - Zoidberg - 05-03-2008 There's a little league here in the Little Rock area that I've done work for (writing letters, setting up charity drive forms, etc.). I will likely make them a donation in the coming week, and just tell them it's from a mutual friend. Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - Rain - 05-03-2008 just lurking Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - lafinfil - 05-03-2008 [quote PeterB]I really like 'fil's PAWS suggestion. I think Minty would have wanted or liked something of this sort -- donate in his name, to speak for animals that cannot speak for themselves. That suggestion was from Black Landlord. I just moved it over to this thread Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - SteveO - 05-03-2008 I am gonna be overly busy with some work stuff the next few weeks, so if anyone (dmann? and thanks for stepping up) is keeping a tally of people wishing to donate to whatever is decided upon in Mint's memory, count me in. Please pm me when it's time to donate. Thanks and God bless. Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - kanesa - 05-03-2008 I pm'd dmann that I favored a donation to the Chicago Cub charities in memory of spearmint. The Cubs were such a big part of his life. Not only does this pay for tickets for underprivileged kids but also supports youth sports teams in Chicago. Take a look here: Cubs Care http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/chc/community/com_cc_whatis.jsp Whatever everyone decides is fine with me. Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - AlphaDog - 05-03-2008 First: Read my lips! I'm posting this for informational purposes, not to generate any controversy. I read the suggestion about donations to PAWS, but I realized I didn't know much about them, so I Googled. I thought it was a little strange that the hit at the very top of the page happened to be for an organization within a hundred miles of me. I did more looking and found that "PAWS" is a widely used acronym, which explains a lot. Here's a link to the page on which a number of organizations with similar goals are listed, and all are known in their particular areas as "PAWS." http://www.paws.org/about/wrongpaws/ We might want to reconsider a couple of aspects of this. We could 1) choose an organization with a geographic connection to Mint, chosen in terms of either where he was born and raised (Chicago) or where he lived (California), or 2) we could pick a national organization that would reflect the diversity of our little family, or 3) we could simply choose a group to which we feel some kind of personal connection and make our donations privately. Since it's clear there are some members of our group who will be making private donations in memory of Mint, I am going to see if there is some way to get that information passed along to his family. I'm thinking it would be an arrangement in which naming the donor would be optional, with the organization receiving the donation the primary identifier passed along. This is a recent brainstorm, so I don't have a plan and may not be able to come up with one, either. Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - Paul F. - 05-03-2008 I'm in... and I also suggest, respectfully, that we give 'mints family the opportunity to chime in if they choose to. That said, I will be making a private donation to a local charity in his (screen) name, and one to DManns effort. And I'm not picky about where the collective wisdom decides the group effort goes. I'm not going to assist turning a GOOD DEED into a fight. THAT being said, I don't think 'Mint would like a donation to the ACLU :-) The phrase from shakespeare's Henry V comes to mind.. something about "knocking your leek about your pate"... :-) Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - Jimmypoo - 05-04-2008 >>>The phrase from shakespeare's Henry V comes to mind.. something about "knocking your leek about your pate"... Another phrase from Henry VIII comes to mind.... "Off with yer 'ead!!!" Re: Spearmint Charity Donation Thread - Post Here - mikebw - 05-04-2008 Sure, I think funding some kids to play is also a great idea. Nobody here claims to know what is best, but based on my experiences with minty it seems like he would have appreciated somehow involving the Cubs. That Cal Ripken foundation also seems very good. |
