I'm curious about the electronics: what are the worst offenders and what kind of savings can be expected by turning them off when not in use?

These are some recent electric bills for my 1500 sq ft victorian house in NJ with oil heat, gas hot water & electric washer:

May 30, 2008 82.73
Apr 27, 2008 111.82
Mar 31, 2008 128.90
Mar 01, 2008 134.46
Jan 27, 2008 177.27
Jan 01, 2008 152.34

The May 30 bill dropped by $29 because I began shutting down my DP 533 mhz G4 with 19" CRT monitor when I wasn't using it. I primarily use the 'ol beast as an iTunes & iPhoto server and a print server.

My bill is running about -$50 a month right now (the electric company owes me money) due to the solar panels on the roof (and no A/C). They don't actually send me a check but they'll credit me the summer extra come wintertime.

You all need to move to an area with a REAL energy monopoly…

$311 last month. And that's a low one. We'll be looking at the low $500s by September…

[quote AlphaDog]Mine averages about $53 a month year round. The stove, furnace, and water heater are all gas, and I don't have central air. The bill will vary slightly, especially if I have to use the window a/c in the summer. Most of my bulbs are CFLs, but the dryer is electric, and I also have an old B&W that runs 24/7 as my server. I promised myself I wouldn't get rid of it until it died. Um, it seems to have no intention of doing that! It's now outlived two other newer Macs.
About like Alphadog.

Get yourself a kill-a-watt and measure the devices. My G4 server that runs 24/7 draws ~220 watts constant. More at startup. Vacuum cleaners, blow dryers, dish washers, clothes dryers, microwaves, etc. are all very high (most 1000w + from my testing experiments). I haven't tested a fridge or freezer yet.

That's what we've got here... no one wants to service a post-K New Orleans, and so Entergy can charge pretty much whatever they like. My first bill upon arriving here was $450.

My G4 server that runs 24/7 draws ~20 watts constant, it's a PowerBook G4 400 MHz with an external FW drive that is spun down most of the time. It has a Kill-a-watt monitoring it 24/7.

While all of those other things that you mentioned draw a lot, they don't run 24/7, especially something like a microwave. 220 watts would be almost 30% of my average total household electrical usage for the past month.

My last electric bill was $65.06 for 525 KWH for 29 days. That averages to about 755 watts per hour.

I think you mean 755 watt-hours per hour.

Correct, thanks for pointing that out.
