What is the reasoning for porch lights on 24/7? It seems to me to be a huge waste of energy.
Why not just use the motion detectors?

i wonder if failures like these are related to some kind of wiring or voltage issue. no matter what brand, most of my CFs last for years. i used one bulb in my kitchen for 11 years. i still have it actually - it's a really old style that i need to remember to recycle. every bulb in my home is CF except the refrigerator and dryer bulbettes. i may change some out because i want a different wattage or shade of light but rarely do they die.

Is the 5 light strip with he bulbs coming out horizontally? Some brands of CFL's do not work as well in that orientation.

What's the light output and color temperature of a 220V bulb running on half-power?
While good for long life, it seems like it would seem dim regardless of the power rating (Watts).

you leave the light on so the wires don't freeze.

Down here (240V) we have bayonet and Edison screw.
Probably 60 / 40 in favour of bayonet.
