Everything from GM, to BMW, VW, Chrysler, Suzuki
All seem to put either an arrow or the pump handle on the side for the filler.

billb, is that first pic a '56 Chevy?
Way back when I was a yout, I was riding in a beater '56 with my brothers wife. She pulled into a gas station and I jumped out to pump some in. I felt like a fool trying to figure out where that filler cap was!

Gas fills in lights and behind license plates were not uncommon.
Not uncommon to see the license plate fills leak a good amount driving away from the pumps.
The long hose lane is for guys who can't wear shorts.

so does my minivan. i only noticed the indicator a few years ago but once i became aware of it, i have looked for it on rental cars and it's always there.
