Not to hijack, but in the past week I've talked to about a dozen and a half clients and friends who I helped get over to MacBooks when they first started coming out. They had all been WinXP converts.
Not one of them said they gave a good crap about Firewire. The only ones who used it routinely were those I convinced to buy external HDs as backups, and even most of them just hooked them up via USB2.
So, a lot of bitching in the Mac community -- much like when they dropped FW support on the iPod -- but the average user really doesn't care.

That's an interesting point, Ralph.
Apple is determining which models get which features with an eye on the masses.
I think the masses in the Mac market quickly becoming Windows switchers.
If Steve & Co. want to make the argument that most "consumers" don't need firewire that's one thing.
If they delete firewire from the iMac which is quickly becoming the production machine of choice in the Mac desktop sector; that is entirely a different thing. That would be a deal breaker with the customers I deal with.
I don't agree with the deleting firewire from MacBooks but what's done is done. They aren't likely to roll back from a decision.
They used to have a Black MacBook tax. Now we have the firewire tax. Time to carry on.

In the Good to Great book about CEOs of companies that are deemed as being great (not just good.) there are several criteria that Steve Jobs has more or less met.
The one he faisl on is "Identifying and mentoring a qualified successor.
If it's Schiller, then Schiller, it's a little worrying... as a spokesperson, he needs to fix his image.
It its Cook, he needs more air time.
WHo is it? Nopbody seems obvious and so that's the problem.

Not at all. Neither Apple nor Jobs is obligated to publicly state who his successor at some unknown point in the future will be. For that matter, nor is Jobs required to publicly disclose his health status.
BTW, does anyone here know the health status of any other CEO of a large corporation? No? I guess all those other corporations aren't playing fair either...

Are you saying you didn't approve the omission of the firewire port from the new macbooks?
