Re: Morons of the week - AlphaDog - 12-03-2009 Let's keep in mind that somebody reported this couple missing. The law enforcement agencies don't just spontaneously begin searches for people. Perhaps the biggest problem is not the choice of tree hunting site nor their use of a Subaru nor the lack of cell phone signal but rather their inability to make contingency plans that family members and friends know about. Like - "Well, last year we got stuck, but we managed to get out on our own eventually, so call the police if we're not back by Saturday. There are TV dinners in the freezer." I do understand that the cell phone has revolutionized our lives, but I'm not sure that's a good thing. People now seem to have an expectation that if someone is not able to be reached immediately by phone that something disastrous must have happened and they need rescuing. What happened to emergency planning by reasonable adults? Re: Morons of the week - Panopticon - 12-04-2009 geez, wasn't this an episode of My Name is Earl ?? Welcome to America, where it's more difficult to adopt a pet than to become a 'parent'!! Search Expenses per HOUR:
Free tree, Priceless?? Re: Morons of the week - ztirffritz - 12-04-2009 I don't think that they did anything irresponsible. They should have had better supplies in their vehicle, but that applies to EVERYONE who travels in the winter outside of major metro areas. Cell phone coverage is nice, but not a necessity. Quite a bit of the US doesn't have cell phone coverage, certainly not in the places that I most like to go. Most people in big cities have NO CLUE how big the US is and just how remote a location you can be in within 5 minutes of an interstate. I've had my truck get snowed in at a snowpark because 3 feet of snow fell during the time I was in the woods. That sucked, but I had a tent, sleeping bag, avalanche shovel, food, fuel...all the necessities. I spent quite a bit of time digging the truck out until I got close enough that one of the plow trucks could help to pull me out. I never really appreciated the size of the US until I moved across the country. It is big...REALLY big. Re: Morons of the week - Pam - 12-04-2009 My first reaction was to laugh...Subaru off road... uh huh. No freaking clearance! I see people in these supposed hybrid going places they have no business going. A subaru cannot go places that a true off road vehicle like a Jeep can go. Duh. Hopefully there won't be a three-peat. Re: Morons of the week - Pam - 12-04-2009 No, hybrid as in a jeep wannabe crossed with a passenger vehicle. I guess these days they're terming them crossovers. Re: Morons of the week - Go To Top - 12-04-2009 Subaru just looks like an old 80s station wagon to me. They have a small bright blue Subaru sedan of some kind - I don't know what the model is called. It might be four wheel drive vehicle, but it sure didn't look like anything I'd ever take up into the forest to get a Christmas tree.
