Have the kid wear a helmet. We also had skate board pads so we used those also. The bike was a 16" model. Our kid was so afraid and crying her head off, but she quickly got the hang of it.

We did the whole "hold the seat and chase after them" for a bit one day.
Then a month later she asked me to remove the training wheels again and she just took off. One more kid to go!
Reading on the web it was suggested that you wrap a towel around the seat stem so you would not need to bend over to hold the seat.. never got to try it on our eldest.

I don't have any tips, but I remember when my youngest daughter saw her older sister riding without training wheels the first time. She told me "take them off." I took them off her bike too and she rode away without any problems.
One of my earliest memories is riding my bike with my dad holding onto the rear fender. One time i looked back and saw that he had let go and was a block behind me. I crashed immediately, but after that I could ride a bike by myself.

I'm amazed that nobody has mentioned teaching them on a slight hill. For both my kids we used a very slight hill and had them coast down the hill with mom or dad running behind hanging onto the seat. Quite effective, and much easier to get started than having to deal with the most difficult of bike maneuvers...pushing off and developing torque on that first pedal downstroke. This is a much easier way of teaching than doing it on flat ground.

He did it! The weather finally gave us a chance to go out and practice and he did it!
