in order for it to be long enough, it's too long to be practical

Well, we'd need some specifics before making too many universal truths.

But referencing that dock specifically, if it were made out of an aluminum shell or balsa wood to the same specifications as that in the photo, I bet it would be just as stable.

If the iPad were designed to lean back at a lesser (or greater, depending on where it's measured) angle, then it would need a longer base.

In order for weight to make matter, the difference would have to be substantial, i.e., smaller and *much* heavier, given the weight of the iPad.

Some café in San Francisco made a nice rotating iPad dock out of wood and they're using it as a POS terminal.

I made a wood stand for my ipod many years ago, so I could keep it at eye level as I worked out. It was cobbled together out of pieces of wood and worked great, even if the ipod display was a bit hard to see because the back light turned off after a few seconds. I haven't been using it for some reason with the touch though.

This is a sure sign that we gotta find something more interesting to disagree about.

Paper clips, maybe?

Re: smaller and much heavier, that's true, when I was at the Apple Store the other day, I picked up the official Apple mini-stand for the iPad, and it was both very small, and really heavy for its size. And not surprisingly, overpriced, so I didn't buy one. But I didn't rule it out. If they get cheaper, I might get one.

In the meantime, the DIY alternatives that are flourishing look like more fun.
