The automobile industry, when it emerged from infancy into maturity, went through a similar process. Automobile manufacturers seemed hell bent on ridding themselves of "serious" car owners (mechanics, hobbyists, and stuntmen, with goggles, leather gloves, and greasy jumpsuits) so they could concentrate on "consumer automobiles".

That may be true, but even the consumer oriented PS3 was designed with an easy method to upgrade the hard drive.

I can't really remember about the hard drives, but the optical drives, the ram, the video cards etc... at one stage these were all a problem.
I'm kind of bummed that the new MacBook Pros are so poorly specced i.e. no USB 3, No eSATA, no Express card slots, etc. etc. and no quad cores!
Also they are really getting expensive.
