2 of my 3 Buicks have full poly suspensions. They started with the musclecars decades ago, and spread to the ricers. My Gran Sports handle like slot cars now, but I did more than just bushings, although they were a big part.

I'd ask the independent mechanic for his opinion, and a quote.

A surface crack in rubber is a different issue from a worn out bushing affecting tire wear and safety.

You do need some decent tools.
