The original 450 MHz G4 Cube was $1799 too, without monitor. For them the extra $1000 price is perfectly fine since they can brag about the new feature to their peers. Why? Their peers charge $850 for the upgrade. LOL Re: Official Keynote Post It Here Thread ! - spearmint - 01-15-2008 The top of the line solid state storage solves the hard drive failure problem but isn't the entire unit a little flimsy looking? Maybe in a Dell Commercial someone will break one in half with their hands. Re: Official Keynote Post It Here Thread ! - Gareth - 01-15-2008 [quote TheTominator]To address limited battery life for extended stays away from AC power, third parties will step in with solutions in the same way they did for the iPods with supplementary battery that connects to the power connector. Except there still aren't any third-party magsafe products, which makes the likelihood of an elegant external battery nil or very expensive (using a hacked up retail magsafe adapter end, which is what is done now to connect to some third-party chargers). Re: Official Keynote Post It Here Thread ! - guitarist - 01-15-2008 Re: built-in disc player wish for AppleTV: "I’d actually consider one if along with the new features it had DVR capabilities and might have even bought one now if it had an optical drive. That way, I could ditch the TIVO, VCR, DVD Recorder and DVD player. One box to handle the chores of all these items. People want less gadgets and the AppleTV doesn’t do enough to reduce the clutter. I hear you. I don't disagree that strongly. It is a valid point of view. Apple did the right thing, though, I think. re: reducing clutter--for some multi-purpose devices, that's true, iPhone is a good example of gadget-reducing, simplifying (and very popular) device. Other times it's better for a device to NOT try to be everything to please everyone, and aim instead for a more purist and forward-thinking (rather than backwards compatible) approach. I don't imagine Apple getting into the business of building and selling DVD players (that also rent-and-stream HD movies, play photos, play iTunes music, etc., it already does a LOT for one device) and here's why: If an optical drive were to be included, it would absolutely have to play High Definition discs. Otherwise, it makes no sense. Which means it would have to be a Blu Ray optical device. Which means it would drive the costs up beyond what consumers would be willing to pay. If it had a disc player, but didn't play High Def discs, people would bitch and moan like you wouldn't believe. Also, the clutter you speak of can only mean cable clutter, because the amount of space an Apple TV takes up is pretty slim. I like multi-purpose devices, too, for the same reasons. If not for the Blu Ray paradox mentioned above, it *might* make sense for Apple to build in a disc player, but I'd add one more problem to building in an optical drive: it sort of competes with, rather than being a companion to, Apple's aim to be a serious leader in the movie-rental business. Convenient movie rentals with no physical disc, in Hi Def, via network, without ever leaving your couch. Works for me. Speaking of couches, I often think of the "Sofa Bed" analogy. If you've ever owned a Sofa-Bed, you know what a beast they are. They're heavy. They aren't good at being a couch, and they aren't good at being a bed. They're uncomfortable at BOTH. I'd rather have a couch be a couch. And a bed be a bed. And be good at each. What I wouldn't mind seeing is an External Blu-Ray disc player that burns discs, plays discs (both standard DVD and Hi Def) and has a small footprint, so that it could easily be plugged into a desktop computer or an AppleTV or a laptop, etc. Is something like that in OWC's future? I'd like to see that. Making it an appendage, rather than being built-in, might be a solution. Doesn't exactly reduce the number of devices, but making it optional sort of keeps things simple. Q: Maybe you could ditch the VCR to make room for a new multi-purpose device? Or is the VCR built into the DVD player? They had no away around the fact their own web site would be too wide for one. Well, other than admitting they were wrong in designing it so wide. Re: Official Keynote Post It Here Thread ! - Robert M - 01-15-2008 Guitarist, I definitely understand the sofa-bed analogy except in my case, the ones my family own are incredibly comfortable. They are definitely as comfy if not more so than many regular couches and beds I've used over the years. the mom specifically chose high quality models because she wanted them to be uber-comfy. Believe it or not, I'm actually using one near-full time right now because I'm moving into a new apartment and it is in the process of being renovated. That and I haven't bought a new bed yet. That said, even an AppleTv, which I know is small, is still _another_ device in my stack of home entertainment gear, one that isn't offering enough new features to justify the space and additional cost. If I buy another piece of hardware, it has to prove itself cost effective and reduce space and cable clutter. What does the AppleTV offer me that I don't already have with a TIVO (which also doubles as a DVD recorder), a cheap VCR, a cheap DVD player, and a cable box? Not much. The only compelling feature that it offers now is rentals from the itunes store. At this point, I don't want to spend upwards of $200.00 on another device whose only compelling feature is rentals from the itunes tv/movie store. If the appleTv could replace the TIVO, maybe it'd be onto something. But, it can't. It can't even compete with it on features. If I'm going to spend upwards of $200.00 on another home theater device, I'll drop the bucks for machine with greater functionality such as a TIVO HD. At least that can replace my existing TIVO and a cable box, something the AppleTV can't do at this time. And, if I want, I can transfer content to a computer, my existing TIVO DVD recorder (My TIVO has a built in DVd recorder) or my VCR/DVD recorder for archiving to DVD. The VCR/DVd recorder is in a different room but easily transportable. Robert |
