My first CD was, I believe, Lionel Richie's Can't Slow Down, purchased sometime in 1985, followed shortly by Sade's Diamond Life.

My first CD player was a Technics desktop model, purchased in 1986:

and my second, purchased in 1985 when my roommate moved out and took the first player, was a Technics portable model:

I still have this one, and it still works.

sadao watanabe

Don't remember the title - it WAS going to be Pat Metheney As Falls Wichita Falls, but made the mistake of stopping by a used record store just before getting my first CD player and he played a bit of Watanabe for me - had to buy it.

First record paid for with my own money was The Banana Splits - paid $5.04 - can't seem to forget that price.

I think I signed up for that EMI Music Club in 1996 when I came to US and I got 12 CDs at once after I paid for 1 CD (and shipping for the rest)

I'm amazed that so many people remember.

I'm fairly certain that mine was something classical, but I don't remember what: there wasn't very much to choose from at that point. I think my first CD player cost over $400, and it was one of the first "cheap" ones. Yamaha, maybe? After that, a Sony 5-disc model. The sound quality of those first two players was not nearly as good as what I get from the much flimsier-feeling and occasionally finicky Denon 5-disc changer I have now.

How about you? What was your first music disc?

My first legitimately purchased CD was Pink Floyd "Works.," but that wasn't my first CD.

My first CDs were promo "CD Singles" from Sony that I got with my D-5. 'Had some Queen and Madonna on them and a bunch of other stuff. They crumbled into dust a couple of years before I could rip them.

I ordered a bunch of Pink Floyd, Pat Benetar, Yes and Moody Blues from the Columbia House Record Club when they first started selling CDs. It was one of those 10 discs for a penny promos.

They sent me Billy Joel's "Glass Houses," Pat Benatar's "Tropico," a couple of Abba discs and 6 Michael Jackson CDs, including three copies of "Off the Wall."

(Coincidentally, my sister's first CDs included a couple of Abba discs and a small Michael Jackson collection and the first CD that I ever sold for store credit was "Off the Wall.")

Also got my first CDs from one of the music clubs, like space-time. I remember the Neville Brothers, Wallace Roney, and Cassandra Wilson being among them. Don't remember what the others were.

Funny tho, I remember my first cassette was one of Stevie Nicks'.

I had same player, my first home player was a Mitsubishi it had controls for Play, Stop, Pause and Skip
and I believe that was it, the thing weighed about 20 some pounds, I finally tossed it after forcing the
drawer open to get my Supertramp "Brother Where You Bound" CD out of it. The first CD I ever had a was
compilation CD that came with the CD player, one of my early one's was Holst: The Planets. I used get
Digital Audio magazine and bought a lot of CD's on their recommendations. I bought a lot of Telarc
CD's some had warnings about speaker damage if you weren't careful with the volume. Foghat's
"Stone Blue" blew the tweeters out of speakers twice.

I also had the first car CD Player CDX-R7 I think I paid $750 for it and installed it myself. It was a flop
the error codes drove my nuts and ended up returning to AVC a local company in Winston-Salem back
when we still had real Audio retailers that knew something about what they were selling, they had all
the good stuff McIntosh, B&O, Ortofon, Infinity, etc. I miss going into that place.

A couple of my early CD were Pat Metheny's: 80/81, Oregon's self titled CD and Weather Report: Heavy Weather.
