I only 'know' him through reading his articles on the website there and elsewhere.

They're not exceptions to the rule. The rule is they last a long time, except when they're not maintained properly.

EDIT: didnt you do a a sh!tload of work to your allroad? or some big giant tear apart?

Only because the warranty would pay for it. Same issues occur in JDM vehicles but most people don't care.

and FWIW, allroad is returning: http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/10/audi-a4-allroad-detroit-2012/

Actually, it's not really. A car with the allroad name is showing up but it does have most of the functionality of the previous allroad, nor the functionality of the A6 allroad sold in Europe and Canada.

Hmmm...I can understand that. I buy cars to get me from point A to point B. Maintenance and safety are my most important items to consider.

It's pretty obvious by the fact you own a prius that you buy cars to get you from point a to b. That said, I think you're overlooking quite a few safety items if you buy a prius.

Audi will be a lot more fun to drive. But from a quality standpoint, not even within sight of a Honda product.

Sounds like you have a limited definition of "quality." Germans put a lot more effort into a quality experience than Honda. Build quality is also much higher on German cars. For example, the welds tend to be much more solid. But if you only gauge "quality" on the ability for the car to go 300k with not a ton of repairs, then yes Honda would be better.

I base the quality of a car on the fact that typical Euro cars go in for repairs on a regular basis. My most recent cars have been 2009 Volvo C70, 2008 VW R32, 2006 BMW M5, 2006 BMW X3. All of those cars are in the shop regularly. Everything from drivetrain, steering, airbag, suspension, trim, leather, electrical, even a fuel leak. Constant repairs. Honda, Toyota etc, don't have those problems
