I knew a guy, a prominent politico type, who embezzled close to a million dollars. My sister saw the paper with the article of his sentence on the front page - 6 months (working in the prison library). An article next to it told of a black woman nearby who embezzled less than $5,000 (1st offense). She got 20 years.
